MCF Scholar Profile: Lillian T.

Thanks to generous donors who believe in the impact that higher education can have on our communities, the Manatee Community Foundation has the pleasure of awarding scholarships to local students. Since 1998, we have been able to award over $50 million in scholarships and grants.

We enjoy following our scholars through their educational journey and we will periodically highlight these exceptional students.

Lillian T. – Palmetto High Graduate

Lillian T.

High School: Palmetto High School

College: University of South Florida

Major: Secondary English Education

College Graduation Date: December 2023

Next Steps: I will be taking a full-time English teaching position in a Manatee County Secondary School.

Why did you choose your major?
I chose to major in Secondary English Education because the teachers and staff at Palmetto High School had a major, positive effect on my life. They were always there to support me, help me grow, and encourage me in reaching for any and every opportunity that I wanted. I would not be the person I am today without their influence and support. I decided to become a teacher so that I could do the same thing for my future students. I want to help push the next generation of Manatee County students to achieve their dreams and develop a deep love for learning and literature.

Favorite thing about Manatee County
My favorite thing about Manatee County is the community that it provides. At every step in my life and through every major milestone, I have had a community of people encouraging me and helping me along the way. Whether it be a quick hello in a grocery store or a long talk with people who were always willing to sit with me and help me through any problem, Manatee County has provided me with a tight and loving community that I have consistently been able to rely on. Without this community, I don’t know where I would be in life. Being able find a friendly face almost anywhere I go has always been and will always be such a comfort and homey feeling for me.

How has MCF scholarships helped you?
MCF has given me more than I could ever truly express in words. Over the course of my time in college, MCF has been a consistent encourager and supporter for me. From financial aid that allowed me to focus on my studies to little check-ins to wish me well, every step of the way towards becoming the educator I am today, MCF has been there to cheer me along. Without MCF, I know that I would not have been able to achieve as much as I did or take on as many opportunities as I was given. I cannot thank MCF enough!

Your mentor(s) and why?
My Cooperating teacher from my final Internship was Lori Miesner at Bayshore High School. I am so thankful for the guidance she gave me as I was learning to be a teacher. She helped shape not only my teaching practices, but also fostered and encouraged my passion for education. Mrs. Miesner and the students I worked with at Bayshore High School taught me so much about how to be an effective educator and I will always be grateful for them.

What piece of advice would you give to high school seniors?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take chances. Many of the most amazing opportunities I had in college came from me talking with professors and taking leaps of faith. Although it may seem scary, most of your professors and the staff you interact with will do anything they can to help you succeed. Don’t let your nerves hold you back from incredible opportunities!

What would you like to share with scholarship donors?
Your kind donations have changed my life and influenced my teaching practices for the better. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and the ability it has given me to continue to help our community learn and grow through supporting our students.

Any final thoughts?
Thank you for everything!
